We’ll stay in the quintessentially Transylvanian village of Viscri, quaint painted cottages line the main street, with horse and cart passing by as we are welcomed into a tight-knit community to share their rich and warming local food. Tuesday 4th September

Arrive into Bucharest in the late afternoon for a quick transfer to a local village. Here we will be treated to the very best in Romanian wine and get to excite our senses when we sample an array of Romania’s finest. We then retire to our delightful countryside chateau surrounded by vineyards.

Dinner included. Overnight in Ceptura.

Wednesday 5th September

Up bright and early this morning for a full day of walking through rural Romania, leaving the comforts of urban life behind. Our route today begins in Padina as we trek to the cable car at ‘’Babele si Sfinxul’’. After walking through the forested rolling green landscape, we reach Peles Castle, a magnificent replica of the neo-renaissance period.  Peles is a fairy tale castle of wooden beams and fantastic turrets. Inside are large halls of Moorish, Florentine and French style paintings, libraries and medieval suits of armour between secret passageways.

We will overnight in the rural area around Bran in a luxurious and traditional guesthouse.

Breakfast and lunch included. Overnight in Bran.

Approximate walking distance: 7.5kms

Thursday 6th September

Another early morning as we venture into the rural area of Bran where we experience the exceptional wildlife of the countryside and the traditional lifestyles in the villages around Bran. After our scenic walk, we shall visit Bran castle which is also known as ‘Dracula’s Castle’; make sure to bring some garlic to ward him off! Bran Castle is a 14th-century red-roofed monolith, that rises out of the forest on the edge of a cliff and was lately the residence of Queen Marie in the 1920s. The castle’s true claim to fame though is having been visited by Vlad the Impaler. An iconic haunted castle, expect to find torture instruments, secret passageways and intrigue around every corner.

Breakfast and lunch included. Overnight in Bran.

Approximate walking distance: 12kms

Friday 7th September

The quaint village of Viscri, allows us to get back to basics and experience true rural Transylvania living. The village has one main street dotted with pastel coloured farmhouses, one of which is allegedly a bed and breakfast owned by Prince Charles. We will be greeted by welcoming locals and share their traditional home-cooked food made from the freshest local produce. An untarmacked road takes us off the beaten track to Viscri and there is a definite feel of travelling back in time to a simpler life away from the hustle and bustle of the daily grind. This isolation means the village is surrounded by gorgeous untouched countryside, filled with many different ecosystems and home to soaring and swooping birds of prey, rare frogs and the roaming grazers of local farmers. Perfect for exploring on foot.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Viscri.

Approximate walking distance: 6kms

Saturday 8th September

Waking up in the quiet countryside we will enjoy breakfast and experience local activities. First, we shall embark on a forest walk to the neighbouring village of Mesendorf, a traditionally built collection of dwellings surrounding a white church. We shall then make our way to Saschiz. Saschiz is one of seven fortified churches built by the Transylvanian Saxons in the 15th century and was home to a unique style of blue pottery developed in the 7th century that has unfortunately been forgotten. In attempts to revive the style, there is now a traditional pottery workshop here which we shall partake in. The true highlights today are our home-cooked lunch at the beautiful home of a wonderfully welcoming local couple.

Breakfast and lunch included. Overnight in Viscri.

Approximate walking distance: 10kms

Sunday 9th September

Today we return to the incredible Viscri village for our penultimate day of adventure and exploration. We make our way around stunning architecture where we can get a sense of what life was like for the traditional Saxon population of times past. We will get a chance to visit the UNESCO fortified church in the village, which is a true relic of the past with its ornate timber beams and still-used chapel. After our walk, we may also have the chance to visit the local brick-maker or visit one of the local farmers to collect eggs or even milk a cow!

Breakfast included. Overnight in Viscri.

Approximate walking distance: 10kms

Monday 10th September

Our walk today will be based around the area of Sighisoara, which is what many consider to be Europe’s best preserved medieval citadel. Lined by ornate churches and tall towers, the city rivals old Prague or Vienna for its atmospheric magic. It is also the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s legendary creation – Count Dracula. We’ll walk around the charming streets soaking up the medieval ambience of the city that has been lost elsewhere in Europe. This afternoon we will also have the chance to try our hand at some horse riding in Danes if we are taken by the spirit of adventure.

Tonight we enjoy a final farewell dinner together in Viscri with our new found friends.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Viscri.

Approximate walking distance: 3kms

Tuesday 11th September

Today we return home via Bucharest for some much deserved R&R.

Breakfast included.

Please note an intermediate level of fitness is required for this trip as it is geared towards people who are capable of enjoying walks that will be a maximum of 12km/5 hours per day. There will be days with shorter walks but most days do include a walking excursion. You are required to have an intermediate to advanced level of experience doing such distances. The walks will be in undulating countryside; some walks will involve shorter but steeper technical sections; others will include more gentle, but longer ascents and descents. There are the occasional steep sections, at times series of steps, as well as sections with loose rocks under foot, but there will be no scrambling or climbing.

There may be opportunities to opt out during the walks, however these are limited, so it is crucial that you are well prepared for the walking involved. In the interests of your safety and the rest of the group’s enjoyment if, at any time, the tour manager or walking guide feels that you are not suited to a walk or are not able to complete a walk for any reason, they may, at their discretion, request you to stay behind or return to the hotel.
