Welcome to Sicily
Sicily is the perfect blend of ancient Greek and Roman history, quintessential Italian charm and rugged natural beauty. On our tour we will discover the island’s stunning East Coast. We will feel the warmth of the Sicilian people as we hop from village to village, each one more endearing than the next. On one side will be the piercing blue Mediterranean and on the other, vast, ominous and beautiful Mount Etna. Looming over Eastern Sicily’s skyline and shaping the surrounding landscape, with gorges, ridges and peaks all to be traversed, Etna makes the East Coast a rambler’s paradise. Our trip will finish with a spot of recuperation with a break in Taormina, a romantic commune built into the cliff. It’s cobbled streets inspired the writing of DH Lawrence, and the stage of its second century Greek theatre perfectly frames Etna in the background.

Monday 16th October
Today we arrive into Catania and transfer to our quaint hotel in Nicolosi. We will be able to spend the afternoon exploring the typical Sicilian charms of this quaint little village. Nicolosi is based on the Southern tip of the Parco dell’Etna and sits in the immense volcano’s shadow.
Overnight in Nicolosi.
Tuesday 17th October
Today we will tread one of the most spectacular paths along Sicily’s most celebrated attraction. We will traverse the southern side of Mount Etna, which Goethe described as ‘’The ultimate Etna Landscape’’ and questioned ‘’Who, in front of such a peculiar scenery, has not tried at least once to imagine its ancient origins, lost in time?”
Breakfast included. Overnight in Nicolosi.
Approximate walking distance: 8 – 14 km
Wednesday 18th October
Today we will enjoy another full day’s walk discovering more of Etna’s natural beauty. Etna’s continued volcanic activity has produced an entirely unique ecosystem with huge biodiversity. We will be able to enjoy the aromatic Sicilian autumn on its northern slopes, with pungent herbs, mushrooms and fallen leaves all around.
We will finish our walk today in the stunning commune of Castiglione di Sicilia. The village exudes quintessential Italian charm. It’s medieval cobbled streets are lined with churches, museums and delightful cafes and bakeries selling local produce, including the sumptuous cannoli. Our welcoming inn fits in perfectly with the town’s laid back and relaxing charm.
Breakfast Included. Overnight in Castiglione.
Approximate walking distance: 8 – 14 km
Thursday 19th October
Today we will depart Castiglione and escape into Sicily’s spectacular countryside and begin to discover a different aspect of the island’s volcanic heritage. The Alcantara Gorges are deep incisions cut into the rocks and cliffs, sculpted by the eruptions of Etna. Hot lava encountering ice cold water has produced bizarrely symmetrical basalt lava prisms. The powerful wake of water and lava has left behind valleys such as Alcantara that are filled full of lush and varied flora and fauna. Along the Alcantara’s verdant banks through its sheer gorges we will encounter small lakes with waterfalls and rapids providing a gentle soundtrack to our walk.
We arrive into our luxury country estate to relax after a hard day’s walk. The property is surrounded by olive trees, vineyards and citrus groves. If we are lucky we will get the chance to sample some of this delicious local produce.
Breakfast Included. Overnight in Mitogi (Alcantara Valley).
Approximate walking distance: 9.5 – 12 km
Friday 20th October
Today we will ascend to the summit of Mount Venere. This is perhaps the best view point in Sicily with a stunning panorama of Etna as well as the Nedbrodi and Peloritani mountains. We will also be able to look down upon the sloped rooftops of Taormina leading down to the pure blue Mediterranean.
We finish today’s route in Castelmola, one of Sicily’s most beautiful villages. It sits on a natural balcony above Taormina and boasts an ancient Roman castle. In Castelmola we can enjoy Sicily’s café culture in picturesque bliss. The patios and terraces allow us to enjoy a relaxing cappuccino after a hard day of walking.
Breakfast Included. Overnight in Castelmola.
Approximate walking distance: 8.5 – 14.3 km
Saturday 21st October
Our route today will take us around Castelmola’s charming streets amongst medieval churches, nestled next to piazze. It is essential to try some of the local produce such as the respected Almond wine or delectable cannoli. After a morning around Castelmola we will begin our descent towards Taormina. We will pass by Isola Bella and Mazzaro beach and stop here to soak up the truly Mediterranean atmosphere emanating from the bays of the Gulf of Naxos. We will then continue along the old fisherman’s pathway which will take us into the heart of Taormina. We will enjoy the evening at leisure in Taormina.
Breakfast included. Overnight in Taormina.
Approximate walking distance: 6.5 – 8 km
Sunday 22nd October
Today will be a day to rest and recuperate from the week’s walking in perhaps Sicily’s most beautiful town – the glitzy and historic coastal retreat of Taormina.
Taormina is the jewel of the Ionean Riviera. It sits tranquilly built into the cliff face. Taormina is the perfect place to get lost in the enchanting complex of medieval streets. You will soon find yourself at the stunning Greek amphitheatre, the gap behind its stage revealing towering Etna across the bay. Taormina boasts the same booming café culture as Castelmola but on a much larger scale. Taormina also hosts an abundance of traditional Sicilian goods to sample and bring home – be they locally-produced wines, cheeses, olive oil, or any number of sweet treats.
Breakfast included. Overnight in Taormina.
Monday 23rd October
Today we will transfer back to the airport in Catania for our journey home.
Please note a general level of fitness is required for this trip as it is geared towards people who are capable of enjoying walking for 4 to 8 hours every day. Some walks will involve shorter but steeper technical sections; others will include more gentle, but longer ascents and descents. There are the occasional steep sections, at times series of steps, as well as sections with loose rocks under foot, but there will be no scrambling or climbing.
There may be opportunities to opt out during the walks, however these are limited, so it is crucial that you are well prepared for the walking involved. In the interests of your safety and the rest of the group’s enjoyment if, at any time, the tour manager or walking guide feels that you are not suited to a walk or are not able to complete a walk for any reason, they may, at their discretion, request you to stay behind or return to the hotel.
