Welcome to Madagascar

Madagascar is arguably the most unspoilt and unique country on the planet. It is a natural phenomenon, with around 90% of its flora and fauna exclusively indigenous to the island. Your adventure begins shrouded in greenery, with lemurs swinging overhead joined by a cacophony of exotic birdsong in the celebrated Andasibe National Park. We will continue to a secluded east coast property to relax and unwind, where we will be entertained by local tribe people and friendly lemurs who may perch on your shoulder if you let them. We will also attempt to get to grips with an ancient and varied culture with visits to local villages and temples. Finally, we will visit Morondava, where the ambience of the forest dissipates into beautiful golden sandy beaches and refreshing sea air. Not only is Madagascar’s wildlife endemic to the island, but its landscapes are equally as distinctive. Morondava is home to the mystifying and imposing bucket list destination of the Avenue of the Baobabs. This trip is truly a once in a life-time opportunity to get up close and personal with one of the world’s most mysterious and diverse island paradises.

Below is the itinerary for the holiday. Please click each day for more information.

Sunday 3rd September

Arrive in Antananarivo and transfer to our hotel.

Overnight in Antananarivo.

Saturday 4th September

Transfer to Andasibe National Park and surround yourself with verdant green flora and unique fauna. On the way, we will visit the Peyreiras Reptile Park to come face to face with fantastic beasts indigenous to Madagascar, such as specific breads of iguana and chameleon.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Andasibe.

Sunday 5th September

Venture from Andasibe to the isolated and spectacular beach front location of Ankanin’Nofy. Here we will get to traverse the Canal de Pangalanes, a stunning canal made up of rivers, waterways and lakes running down the east coast of Madagascar. When we reach our secluded hotel, we will soak up the sun on the sandy golden beaches surrounded by the resort’s own nature reserve.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Ankanin’Nofy.

Monday 6th September

Enjoy all that Ankanin’Nofy has on offer as we explore the nature reserve where friendly lemurs roam freely. We will also be able to visit Andranokoditra Village, a small fishing village squeezed between Pangalanes Canal and the Indian Ocean to enjoy their cultural wealth.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Ankanin’Nofy.

Tuesday 7th September

Go in search of the Aye-aye! This curious and rare animal with the bizarre extended middle finger can only be found on Madagascar and Ankanin’Nofy is the only reserve in the country where you are almost guaranteed to find one.

We will also be visited on the reserve by local tribes people who will perform traditional Malagasy dances for us. Malagasy culture is influenced by the wide spread of civilisations that have migrated to this island and there are different forms of dance depending on the social context, such as weddings, religious ceremonies and exhumations – all performed in gloriously ornate costumes.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Ankanin’Nofy.

Wednesday 8th September

Return to Andasibe for our night walk through one of the nation’s most celebrated national parks. The atmosphere and sounds of the forest are a sensory overload with the howls of different lemur species joined by a chorus of exotic bird song.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Andasibe.

Thursday 9th September

Awake in our charming and atmospheric forest lodge to a cacophony of animal song and the sounds of the forest. Explore all the wonderful and bizarre nature Andasibe has to offer, with a guided tour to some of the national park’s most beautiful spots.

Friday 10th September

Journey through spectacular countryside unlike anywhere else on earth from Andasibe back to the nation’s capital.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Antananarivo.

Saturday 11th September

Fly from Antananarivo to Morondava. Our first port of call will be the UNESCO world heritage site and unofficial wonder of the world, The Avenue of the Baobabs. Few people get to experience the avenue in their lifetime due its remote location. Vast baobab trees with huge bases stretch up to 35 feet into the air and only branch out at the very top like a mushroom or umbrella. These majestic trees, that once formed a dense forest, now line the road to Morondava like imposing gatekeepers.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Morondava.

Sunday 12th September

Relax on the white sandy beaches of Morondava from our delightful seafront hotel and spa.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Morondava.

Monday 13th September

Return from Morondava to Antananrivo.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Morondava.

Tuesday 14th September

Discover Madagascar’s capital. We will enjoy a city tour and visit to the sacred Ambohimanga Palace. This will give us an insight into the deeply traditional and spiritual Malagasy society. Ambohimanga is a royal city and burial site where pilgrims gather to worship and celebrate their national identity. This evening we will head to the airport for our early morning flight.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight on flight.

Wednesday 15th September

Arrive home.
