Welcome to Lisbon

Lisbon is a vibrant metropolis that is a delight to all the senses. Filled with unique neighbourhoods, Lisbon is lined by cobbled streets peppered with traditional tabernas in Alfama or the spectacular UNESCO world heritage monuments in Belem. The city’s grand architectural majesty reminds us of Portugal’s powerful imperial and royal past – nowhere exemplifies this more than the former royal residences at Sintra. Just outside the city, Sintra is set against rolling green hills leading to the pure blue Atlantic. No trip would be complete without sampling the traditional local delicacies, so indulge with exceptional wines and locally made Port or perhaps a Pastéis de Belem, the world-famous custard tart.

Overnight in Lisbon.

Monday 19th June

We will enjoy a guided exploration of Lisbon’s fascinating streets. Travel through Baixa, Chiado and Alfama, a historic district still surrounded by ancient Visigothic walls. Narrow streets are lined with tabernas, vibrant fruit stands and welcoming people who create a unique, authentic atmosphere. Our tour will also include a tasting of Portuguese wines, including a port, some cheese, bread and olive oil. This will provide us with an insight into the culture of the people of Alfama by getting to sample some of the flavours that are synonymous with their district.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Lisbon.

Tuesday 20th June

Today we’ll embark on a guided walking tour of the Belem district. Once the prestigious home of Portugal’s elite, the area maintains its air of privilege and decadence. Now it is most famous for its well-maintained monuments such as The Tower of Belem and Jeronimos Monastery. It also has fantastic botanical gardens and museums. The passing ships transport us to an age where it would have been bustling with explorers and adventurers heading to the New World and bringing commerce to a thriving imperial power.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Lisbon.

Wednesday 21st June

Venture to picturesque and alluring Sintra. This UNESCO listed centre is home to a decadent Moorish Palace, sprawling pastel houses and exotic gardens. Towering above the skyline is the Pena Palace which provides one of the best replications of what a Portuguese royal residence would have been like.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Lisbon.

Thursday 22nd June

Today we must say farewell to the City of Light and begin our journey home.
