Welcome to Ischia

Sitting serenely in the bay of Naples is the Island of Ischia, the largest of the spectacular volcanic islands that face these gorgeous shores. Luscious wine producing vineyards, one of the world’s most beautiful sensory gardens and a dramatic rocky outcrop formed by a turbulent volcanic heritage are just a few of this island’s varying charms.

On one such outcrop on the Island’s North Coast sits the imposing fortress of Castello Aragonense that acts as a gatekeeper to Il Puorto and announces your imminent arrival onto Ischia. Our island sanctuary provides its inhabitants with exclusive culinary delights – traditional limoncello, fine wine, and of course delectable pizza and pasta! The island is a perfect base from which to discover all the essential highlights of any trip to the Neapolitan Riviera. A guided city tour of cultured Napoli is accompanied with visits to the worlds most famed archaeological sites. In the shadow of Mount Vesuvius remain the impeccable, eerie and tragic Roman ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Tuesday 19th September

Arrive in Naples and sail towards our hotel on Ischia. With an extensive history stretching back to the Ancient Greeks this island is a treasure trove of ruins, overgrown with vibrant lemon groves and peppered with Italian craft shops and cafes. The island also boasts wonderful beaches and clear blue waters and a more relaxed ambience to other destinations in the Bay of Naples.

This evening, we enjoy our first Italian meal together, with the opportunity to sample a glass of traditional limoncello!

Dinner included. Overnight in Ischia.

Wednesday 20th September

Today we will approach the imposing Castello Aragonense by crossing the former drawbridge onto the tiny volcanic islet that sticks out into the gulf of Naples and dominates the skyline. Our tour will take us to the monastery of the Poor Clare Nuns, an ornate cemetery and also to the Cathedral of Ischia, which holds the crypt containing a collection of Giotto’s frescoes.

In the afternoon, you will have the option to join our wine tasting tour in one of Ischia’s lush and verdant vineyards. The islanders will explain their time-honoured methods of wine production and then let us sample their delicious produce.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Ischia.

Thursday 21st September

Today you can join our optional excursion and board a hydrofoil to return to Naples and  discover the city’s chaotic beauty. Despite being stuffed full of fascinating culture and history, the city provides the curious traveller with an authentic Italian experience as it is not yet a touristic city. This means that local restaurants and cafes hold true to traditional cooking methods and Naples is home to arguably the world’s most delicious pizza.  We will have chance after our tour to go in search of real Neapolitan pizza, before seeking a gelato or rum baba – a sponge soaked in liquor.

Naples is Italy’s third largest city and contains a UNESCO listed historic centre.  Highlights include an exploration San Gennaro Cathedral, where each year the famous “Blood Ceremony” takes place. The city is also home to a plethora of beautiful churches sandwiched between gothic buildings and antique residences of the aristocracy. You may wish to make time to visit Naples Naitonal Archaeological Museum which is housed in a former Palace and contains most of Pompeii’s archaeological treasures, and shoppers will want to parade down beautiful Via Toledo.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Ischia.

Friday 22nd September

Today you may wish to take the boat to Sorrento and explore its gorgeous lemon groves and busy historic centre. The town contains Baroque churches and piazzas marked by bustling al fresco dining.

Alternatively why not discover a little more of your island residence by wandering the cobbled compact streets of the main town of Ischia Ponte. Ischia is also famous for its therapeutic springs and natural thermal baths, why not take a dip in one of the many relaxation spots dotted across the island.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Ischia.

Saturday 23rd Septmeber

Journey back in time as we visit the historical cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum on our private guided tour. Following the devastating eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD, Pompeii and Herculaneum lay buried and forgotten for centuries. Excavations began in the 18th century and have subsequently uncovered complex networks of ruins which include city gates, streets, gymnasia, thermal baths, civil and religious buildings, modest dwellings, stately homes, shops and fountains. Perhaps the most amusing of all the discoveries is Pomepii’s brothel, complete with graphic illustrations.

Pompeii carries the fame, but the smaller town of Herculaneum is equally as impressive. A smaller area to explore, the town contains frescos and paintings that look like they were painted yesterday as well as fantastically preserved Roman domus and atriums. We will explore the lives of the town’s residence and their fascinating culture with the entire scene intertwined with a spine-chilling tale of human tragedy.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Ischia.

Sunday 24th September

You may wish to spend today visiting the glorious island of Capri. The island is about four miles long and two miles wide. Seldom has so small an island had so much said, written and sung about it over so many centuries. You can also watch the world go by in one of Capri’s pretty, open-air cafes, discover the labyrinth of medieval cobbled alleyways that are lined by glamourous international designers or admire the sights and scents of the colourful gardens.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Ischia.

Monday 25th September

We will spend our last full day on Ischia in La Mortella Gardens. They were founded by the famous British composer Sir William Walton and his wife, Lady Susana. The gardens are artistically designed and contain musical fountains, multiple tiers and an immense amount of flora and fauna.  The gardens host specimens from all over the planet and the tour invites you to smell, taste and touch this myriad of plant life. We will return to the hotel for our final dinner as the sun sets over the gulf of Naples.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Ischia.

Tuesday 26th September

Today, we must sadly say goodbye to our new-found island paradise and transfer from our hotel to Naples airport for our return flight.

Breakfast included.
