Today we arrive into Medellin to start Colombian adventure. We will transfer to our central hotel.

Overnight in Medellin.

Thursday 2nd November

Nestled in the Aburra Valley, Medellin has undergone a complete transformation into a global city that has become a must-visit. It is the second largest city in Colombia, and thanks to its consistently temperate climate is known as the city of eternal spring. The city is full of juxtaposition, from the high peaks surrounding the city, to the slick university buildings and traditional flower stalls.

We’ll embark on a walking tour of the city to orient ourselves in our new Latin American surroundings.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Medellin.

Friday 3rd November

Today we will get hands on and discover one of Medellin’s historic lifebloods – the ceramics industry. We will get to visit prestigious ceramic producers and discover their time-honoured methods and traditions. We will also get to try our hand at making some of our own pottery, hopefully producing a beautiful memento of our time in Colombia.

Breakfast and lunch included. Overnight in Medellin.

Saturday 4th November

Today we will delve into Medellin’s and Colombia’s tumultuous and troubled past. We will embark on a tour that takes us through the cities intimate and fatal connection to Pablo Escobar. Escobar was head of the Medellin cartel, who controlled a vast part of the international cocaine industry, becoming one of the richest and most powerful men in the world. The well documented manhunt and his subsequent death in 1993 spelled an end to his polarising hold over the city.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Medellin.

Sunday 5th November

Today we will make the short flight north to Cartagena. We will have the day at leisure to wander Cartagena’s vibrant and tropically colourful streets. We will be able to lounge on the golden sandy beaches or take a plunge in our hotel’s pool to cool off and relax now we have reached the Caribbean Coast.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Cartagena.

Monday 6th November

Today we embark upon a guided city tour of Cartagena. The city is surrounded by 13km of impressive stone colonial walls. Cartagena is a city of great variety and is made of many different components. Inside the city walls are vast historic churches sprinkled along typical cobbled streets inbetween colourful houses and balconies. Then there is the Bocagrande beach area on Cartagena’s peninsula where you can wander from the sumptuous beaches straight into the vibrant cafes, restaurants and bars.

We will get an idea of the city’s heritage with the native African and Hispanic influences. This is transfused in the city’s gastronomy and culture. The rhythm, flavours and sounds of Cartagena inspired Gabriel Garcia Marquez whose ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ and ‘Love in the Time of Cholera’ were his greatest works, and he claims the title of founder of the magical realism movement.

No trip to Colombia would be complete without sampling some of the nation’s delicious coffee, renowned for its smooth and rich taste. Colombia produces around 11.5 million bags of coffee per year and is a protected designation of origin. We will sample many different pure blends and discover the nation’s historic and prosperous connection with the coffee bean.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Cartagena.

Tuesday 7th November

Today is a full day excursion to the stunning Islas Del Rosario. Southwest of Cartagena lie twenty-seven coral islands that make up the archipelago. With inland lagoons and the most golden sandy beaches the islands are a therapeutic paradise nestled in the light blue Caribbean. We will enjoy a traditional lunch infused with Colombian and Caribbean influences.

There will also be the opportunity to enjoy a mini diving session, immersing yourself in the pure blue waters and swimming amongst the coral, surrounded by the flourishing aquatic wildlife.

Wednesday 8th November

Today we will discover Cartagena’s enthralling and exuberant modern culture. We will enjoy a Palenque drum safari, as well as a traditional folk show. The people of Cartagena are extremely welcoming and love to show off their exuberant and incredibly colourful culture.
